Blogging Over Fifty
Blogging is a still a great way to earn income and no it hasn’t been taken over by Instagram or Facebook. In fact, those sites are now encouraging more long-form (written) content to be added to pictures. There’s a reason for this which I will go into in another article, but for now, I want you to start thinking about blogging as a way to add income into your retirement or even make an income to replace your job that you no longer have.
It’s NOT an overnight thing so don’t believe anybody who says that. But with steady work you can start earning money in a few months and by 12 months you should really have something.
Don’t let the technology and technical aspects of blogging stop you. It’s easier than ever to start a blog right now. There are a few things to know right off the bat.
Make sure it is self-hosted. What this means is, you are paying for hosting through someone like Bluehost. A free blog generally cannot be monetised and you are then reliant on the platform that hosts it. It leaves you vulnerable. Also you can sell your blog or website but you can’t do this unless you are hosting it yourself.
What Do I Blog About?
Glad you asked. If your intent is to make money, then use your expertise in your particular field or hobby that you know a LOT about. It works well if you have some passion about the subject or can commit to writing a lot about one subject. Avoid diary and personal blogging exclusively, but it does help to put yourself into your material. By this I mean sharing your experience, sharing anecdotal stories about how you got your experience. Provide authority about your subject from your personal viewpoint.
What’s This Niche Thing I Keep Hearing About
A niche is a specific top or area of interest. Sewing is a niche, Quilting is a smaller niche of Sewing and Machine Quilting is a smaller niche again. Blogs work best when they concentrate on a specific topic and go deep on that subject. People who like Machine Quilting for example want to know EVERYTHING about it. Same goes for fly fishing or brake repairs.
Whatever the subject, pick a sub-category you know about and write about your knowledge or find out about a topic.
You can build blogs on specific topics, monetise them, and then sell them for profit. It’s not as hard as you think. These guys are the bomb in terms of showing you how to do this and I recommend them. You can check out all the info they have on how they flip sites as well.
Blogging isn’t for everyone. You need to commit to get the benefits. But if you do, passive income awaits – eventually – but you have to do a fair bit of ground work to get that to work for you. I’ll do some more articles about blogging looking at different aspects of setting it up and how to monetise it. I’ll also do a couple more articles just on writing because that’s a whole other thing entirely.
