Sales

I’m Not A Closer

I found this out about myself recently. The term ‘closer’ is the ability to close a sale in the context I’m writing about it. It can be anything from closing a relationship, a transaction, selling a course, whatever. This is where I can’t quite pull the trigger and I’m still trying to figure out whether I’m OK with it or not.

You know when you get some emails selling you stuff a course or for me, a new sewing machine? And you’re reading the email knowing you’re being sold to? Sometimes you just click off right away but other times, even though you know you don’t need it or in my case, can definitely not afford it, but you click anyway? That’s the art of closing – almost.

Persuasion is probably a better word. Making want it. Some emails and the writers behind them, are better at it than others. It’s definitely a skill. If you believe Dan Lok it’s a high income skill that he sells his course around – copywriting.

Now copywriting has always in my memory, been a thing that has been sold on the internet as soon as it came to my house. It was touted at the next big thing. You can sell anything to anyone with words. I don’t really know if this is true anymore.

How many emails do you actually read nowadays? My print advertising goes straight into the recycling bin.

Visuals, video and youtube ads are where I’m mostly getting my advertising and persuasions from.

Apparently though, copywriting is still a ‘high income skill’ according to Dan Lok and one that can make you $10,000 a month writing for other people and selling their stuff.

This always makes me think though – if you can do it for someone else and make them money, why aren’t you just doing your own thing and making your own money? Why make someone else rich if you can persuade anyone to buy anything? To me it’s still a job mentality. You are still working for someone else, at their beck and call and subject to their whims.

You might be able to run your own schedule and charge bigger prices, take holidays when you want, work from your laptop, but that’s only if it fits in with your client. If they pay you when they say they will. If your copy gets the results you promised.

Also the swipe file is still a thing. This is something that has been written about and recommended since the 1990’s and it’s still being recommended and the first thing to do. Go find what works and base your shit on that. So it’s an endless cycle of copying and re-writing other people’s shit.

Anyway I went down another rabbit hole for a while and came back realising that this is really the same stuff but has been re-packaged to reflect our current times. I was looking for an affiliate program for it and found instead some articles about what a scam it all is. Even the comments have been well crafted in their responses to talk you into the program and are filled with disclaimers.

The only road I know for sure right now is to do what I’m doing.

If it’s wrong, then it won’t be the first time in my life. I’m getting way better at accepting defeat after all these years, seeing how I’ve been defeated so much.

I may not be a closer, but I’m a getter upper. I think in the long run that’s more important.
